SketchUp Interface basics for Windows

Then we have the View menu, and this turns on or off different parts of the interface such as toolbars. We can also turn on things such as shadows or fog and also change the look and feel of the assets in the scene. So, if you wanted wireframe, you could do that here. Next is the Camera menu, and this controls how the scene is viewed as well as where the camera is placed. So, we can orbit, pan, and zoom the camera as well as change the perspective of the camera. Next to that is the Draw menu, and this allows us to draw lines, arcs, shapes as well as use what"s called the sandbox. And this is where we create basic 2D shapes. Now, those 2D shapes are brought into 3D using any number of different tools. Now, these tools can include things such as erasers as well as move, rotate, and scale, but we can also push and pull 2D assets into 3D. We also have a Window menu, which turns on or off different windows in the interface. Now, if you"re using the Macintosh, this menu will probably be a lot bigger than the one we have here on Windows, and that"s because in the Windows interface, we have a lot of the functionality here under the Default Tray. So, as you can see, we have all of these windows, which are normally on the OS X version, kind of hidden behind this menu here. And what this does is it allows us to use what"s called a tray. So if we go over here to the right, in the Windows interface, you"ll see that we have this tray. And all of those windows are located here. So I have one here for Materials, one for Components. I also have what"s called an Instructor, which is a really great little help system. Now, this Default Tray can be pinned. If we click here, we can pin that to our interface, so that it"s always there. And if we unpin it, it automatically hides over here in this tab, so all we have to do is hover over this tab and it brings that up. And, as you can see, we get a lot more screen real estate when we hide the Default Tray. Now, we also have a Help menu, which brings us to a web-based help center as well as allows you to contact Trimble if you need to. Below the File menu is a basic toolbar. Now, this is just one of many toolbars that are available in SketchUp, and we"ll be getting to those in a bit. But these are basically just graphic representations of the main tools that you would use in SketchUp. Now, along the bottom, we have a little bit of a help menu here, so if I"m in Select mode, it will tell me to select objects as well as give me a little bit of a hint. On the bottom left, we have Geo-location, which allows you to place your model anywhere on the planet. We also have Credits. So, if you want to upload your assets to something like the 3D Warehouse, you can add your own credits. And then we also have the ability to log in, and this will log you into the 3D Warehouse, so you can download assets into your SketchUp scenes. Now, finally, on the bottom right corner, we have the Measurements box. Now, the use of this box will change depending upon the tool that you use, but it"s basically where you can type in precise measurements. So, if you wanted to create a very specific-sized square or circle, you could type those dimensions in here. So, that"s the basic interface for SketchUp. And, as you can see, it"s very straightforward and easy to understand.
